One would think that of all the people on the planet most thankful for the blessings in their lives, it would be Christians. One small glance at places like Ephesians 1-2 where God outlines for us the riches we have in Christ would be enough to erase any hesitations. And yet, at times, we struggle as much as those who don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus. Giving thanks is not our default setting. Further proof that we are by nature selfish people who, even after conversion, must train our ourselves to see God’s provision. Disciplining ourselves to see divine opportunities in thorny obstacles is one more affirmation that growing in godliness is not an “automatic” in the Christian life. We must put forth effort, the kind of effort Paul describes in 1 Timothy 4:7-10. We conclude our series on soul care today by examining how to discipline ourselves to be thankful.
