Before, During, and After . . .

In our study of Luke 1, we noted that Luke gives us too many historical details of the Incarnation for us to be fuzzy about God becoming flesh and blood. When God steps into time and space, as He did with Mary, those divine encounters are more than a figment of our imagination. Mary would always look back on that experience with Gabriel and remember the before, the during and the after.
If you know Christ as Savior, you have a similar story. A true story of the people-places-events that led to your transformation. These priceless details are too important to our growth in Christ to gloss over and forget. For that reason, we should periodically promote the details of our encounters with Christ. With that in mind, we asked 3 people from our congregation to share some of the details of how Christ changed and is changing them.

The Power of the Most High - Part 2

Six years ago, the Christmas season began in Northern Utah with an unpleasant surprise. The excitement began on December 1, as many of us woke up to downed trees and vinyl siding scattered all over the neighborhood. Fences were blown over and many were without power. It was one of the worst windstorms this area had seen in decades.Until you see it’s effects, it’s hard to imagine that something you can’t touch and can’t see can be so powerful.

There is another kind of wind that blows from heaven but instead of destroying and demolishing, it builds and inspires. I am referring to the wind of God - Holy Spirit. 2000 years ago, a mighty, rushing wind from heaven came upon a young teenage girl and empowered her to do the impossible. We know her as Mary, the mother of Jesus, and her story is recorded for us in Luke 1: 26-38.

The Power of the Most High

Constantly focusing upon ourselves is a treacherous undertaking. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, in his book, Spiritual Depression, writes that the most depressing person to listen to is yourself. There is no quicker way to become depressed about life circumstances than to constantly listen to yourself talk about your life circumstances. One of the best ways to enjoy the coming of Christ into our lives this Christmas season is to take the spotlight off of ourselves and focus more intentionally on the character of God. Through Gabriel's visit to Mary in Luke 1, we get glimpses of God's wonderful character and its benefit to our lives. Last week, we considered His unconditional love; today we look at His great power.

Hail, Favored One!

In his book, The Pursuit of God, A.W. Tozer tells about the pure joy of knowing God intimately when he writes, “God is so vastly wonderful, so utterly and completely delightful that he can without anything other than Himself meet and overflow the deepest demands of our total nature, mysterious and deep as that nature is.”

Tozer's declaration of faith is more than the musings of a well read minister. He writes from experience not extrapolation. His personal encounter with God reminds us of another divine encounter 2000 years ago. As we turn our attention to the events leading up to Christ's birth this Christmas season, we find in the life of Mary a testimony bearing witness of God's unconditional love. A love no experience on earth can match.

Show Yourself an Example - Part 2

As we move into the Christmas season, we naturally begin to think about the giving of gifts. Though we cannot know with certainty all the gifts ever given at Christmas, there is no question that of all the gifts ever given, God's gift of Jesus was the greatest. Jesus entered this world as an infant baby and exited as the Resurrected Lord. When we by faith receive Him as Savior, His Lordship makes a radical difference in how we live, Christmas time or otherwise. When the God of the Universe comes to live inside you, He comes to make a difference! Paul writes about this transforming difference of grace in a letter to his young ministry assistant, Timothy. We conclude 1 Timothy 4 today by focusing on the last of 4 traits that help us bear witness of God's transforming grace: Consistency.
